Fearing for his life, alleged drug lord Rolando “Kerwin” Espinosa Jr. has asked to become a state witness and be placed under the Witness Protection Program (WPP).
“Because of what happened to his father, Kerwin is afraid of his safety as well as that of his family,” said Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II.
Kerwin’s father, Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., was killed along with a fellow detainee inside the Leyte sub-provincial jail in Baybay City during shootout with policemen who were serving a search warrant.
However, the circumstances surrounding the Mayor’s death has caused it to be viewed as a case of extra-judicial killing.
Kerwin and his father have been tagged by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte as among the biggest drug lords in Eastern Visayas.
Before he died, the Mayor was able to issue sworn affidavits naming persons involved in the narcotics trade including politicians and police officials. [source]
