President Rodrigo Duterte’s war against illegal drugs has received a boost from a Chinese billionaire who donated a 100,000-square meter property to the Department of Health for a “mega” rehabilitation facility for drug dependents.
Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial on Wednesday disclosed that Chinese property tycoon Huang Ru Lun donated the property in Nueva Ecija on which the massive drug rehabilitation facility is being built.
In a press conference, Ubial said Huang has no business interest in the Philippines.
She, however, said the Chinese bilyonaryo met with President Rodrigo Duterte to ask “how he can help” in the administration’s ongoing war against illegal drugs.
“[Huang’s] donation is a big help to our campaign against drugs,” Ubial said.
According to Forbes, Huang has a net worth of $3.9 billion.
Forbes’ website said Huang “found success in the trading business after he moved to the Philippines in 1986” but returned to China in 1991 to invest in real estate.
His real estate company, Century Golden Resources Group, has investments in 20 five-star hotels and 10 shopping malls.
Ubial expects the rehab facility to be fully operational by November.
A P10,000 fee will be charged per patient for rehabilitation expenses, although they may be fully subsidized by the government or made to pay an amount based on their socioeconomic standing. [source]
