Contrary to President Rodrigo Duterte’s earlier statements, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Tuesday said the alleged sex video of Senator Leila de Lima does not exist.
“Actually, I believe that there is no video. There is no actual video. Some have shown me a video but it does not involve any member of the Senate. It is a sex video but it does not involve a member of the Senate,” Pimentel, a close ally and party-mate of Duterte, said during the plenary session.
Pimentel said House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has also assured him that no sex video will be shown at the resumption of the congressional probe on the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison.
Alvarez earlier said he sees nothing wrong if the alleged sex video of De Lima and her former driver and alleged lover, Ronnie Dayan, would be played during the inquiry. Dayan supposedly collected drug payoffs at the NBP on De Lima’s behalf.
Pimentel made the statement in an interpellation with Senator Risa Hontiveros, who took the floor to stand up for De Lima.
“If we stand by in silence while our colleagues in the House perpetrate this indignity against a fellow senator, we have chosen vulgarity over civility, misogyny over basic respect and decency,” Hontiveros said.
“Sino ang susunod? Sino ang susunod na gagawan ng pekeng sex video? Sino ang susunod na hihiyain sa madla? Ako? Si Senator Nancy [Binay], si Senator Grace [Poe], si Senator Cynthia [Villar] o si Senator Loren [Legarda]?” she added.
All lady senators on Monday signed the Senate resolution condemning the plan of the House of Representatives to show the alleged sex video.
While the resolution is already moot after Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said they would not be presenting the alleged tape, the Senate still adopted the resolution.
“Such a resolution and such issue can never be motto. Every time sexism or misogyny raises its head against any woman or any girl whether in families and homes, workplaces, we have to call it for what it is,” Hontiveros pointed out.
All senators were made authors of the resolution.
Senators JV Ejercito, Miguel Zubiri, and Francis Pangilinan stood up to express their support for the resolution.
Senator De Lima was emotional as she thanked his colleagues. She has earlier denied such video exists.
Duterte earlier said that he loses his appetite every time he sees the said video.
“Susmaryosep. Alam mo every time I view the video, I lose my appetite. Nawawala ang gana ko sa kanya," Duterte said.
